COMPETITIVE SPORT

Competitive sport is delivered through Royal Holloway’s Athletic Union, which strives to offer a variety of clubs with their own unique identity and culture to make students' time at the College as fulfilling as it can be. Run by the students, for the students, the Athletic Union supports all of the College’s sports clubs.

The Union consists of around 35 clubs, ranging from football and hockey to lacrosse and archery, and joining one of them is a great way to represent the College, try a new sport, make new friends, get fit or get invited to some of the campus’ best social events. Sporting passion is something that unites a large majority of the students, and is certainly something to be proud of.

PERFORMANCE SPORT

In 2009, Performance Packages were awarded to five teams who illustrated the potential to excel in the BUCS leagues. With support from the College they are expected to greatly improve their results and contribute to the overall national ranking of Royal Holloway.

The five teams selected for the programme include:

  • Men's Basketball
  • Women's Basketball
  • Women's Hockey
  • Women's Lacrosse
  • Men's Rugby

In return for dedication to training and performance teams recieve extra support for Sports Development and Students' Union. The package helps to enhance the student experience within sport as Clubs will be receiving professional coaching lifestyle management giving players the essential skills for achieving success once graduated.

BUCS

The College competes in the BUCS leagues (British University College Sport), previously known as BUSA, which enables students to take their sport to an incredibly high level. Currently there are over 153 Universities and Institutes of Higher Education in its membership. For most team sports, competition begins with regional leagues played every Wednesday afternoon during the autumn term. If your team is good enough to finish top of their league they will advance to national knock-out competitions played on Wednesday afternoons in the spring term, or to the Indoor Finals weekend which takes place in March. Other sports compete in one-day or weekend tournaments throughout the year. BUCS is also responsible for co-ordinating the UK teams for the World University Championships and World University Games.

ULU Sport

University of London students have more organised sports competitions than any other students in the UK. In addition to national competitions, ULU provide more than 20 knock-out cup competitions and a number of different league programmes. Current competitions we are involved in include football, hockey, basketball, rugby union, netball, cricket, badminton, squash and lacrosse. Most of these offer participation by both sexes in either individual or mixed teams. ULU League sport provides a great opportunity to meet new people, make new friends and play more sport.
